"It was in Massachusetts in the year 1866 that I discovered the Science of Divine Metaphysical Healing which I afterwards named Christian Science. The discovery came to pass in this way. During twenty years prior to my discovery I had been trying to trace all physical effects to a mental cause; and in the latter part of 1866 I gained the scientific certainty that all causation was Mind, and every effect a mental phenomenon."-Mary Baker G. "The right teacher of Christian Science lives the truth he teaches. Preeminent among men, he virtually stands at the head of all sanitary, civil, moral, and religious reform. Such a post of duty, unpierced by vanity, exalts a mortal beyond human praise, or monuments which weigh dust, and humbles him with the tax it raises on calamity to open the gates of heaven. It is not the forager on others' wisdom that God thus crowns, but he who is obedient to the divine command, Render to Cæsar the things that are Cæsar's, and to God the things that are God's.'" -Mary Baker G. "'I can of mine own self do nothing,' said Jesus, and the writer of the epistle to the Philippians exhorted those whom he addressed to realize the complete dependence upon the heavenly Father, 'For it is God which worketh i you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.' Then picture a state of society in which every individual has learned to turn to Principle as the source of all action and to admit responsibility to that source only. Such a state of society would be under divine control, governed by the decree of God, harmonized by His law of adjustment, bound in fraternal cooperation, and showered with the blessings of joy. An individual or nation thus constituted would be free from self-righteousness and in the condition of instant responsiveness to divine guidance, and so would be safe in the arms of divine love.
