Print on Demand. This book delves into the critical realm of orthopedic implants, specifically focusing on the retrieval and analysis of these devices after their use in patients. Emerging in the mid -1970s, when implant technology was rapidly evolving, the book addresses the pressing need to evaluate the performance and safety of orthopedic implants. The author explores the complexities of implant materials, particularly metals like stainless steel, cobalt-chromium alloys, and titanium. He examines various failure modes, including mechanical issues such as wear and fracture, as well as the intricate interactions between implants and the human body, such as corrosion and tissue reactions. Through meticulous analysis of retrieved implants, the author sheds light on the factors influencing implant success and failure, offering invaluable insights for improving implant design, materials selection, and surgical techniques. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the clinical, metallurgical, and biological aspects of implants to ensure optimal patient outcomes. By bridging the gap between engineering principles and clinical practice, this book provides a comprehensive framework for advancing the field of orthopedic implants and enhancing the well-being of patients. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. …

Welcome to the National Bureau of Standards (nbs) and to the symposium on Retrieval and Analysis of Orthopaedic Implants. We at nbs are pleased to cosponsor this symposium with the Food and Drug Administration, the American Society for Testing and Materials, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Orthopaedic Surgical Manufacturers Association, and the Society for Biomaterials. The list of organizations is long and impressive, to be sure. I believe, however, that this multiple sponsorship attests to both the importance of the subject and the fact that a wide variety of competences and interests must be brought to gether if we are to reach our common goal of improving the performance of orthopedic implants, I personally am pleased to appear before you to launch this symposium aimed at achieving this goal. I have felt for many years that nbs could make unique contributions by helping to provide standards, test methods, and data that would enable manufacturers, surgeons, and agencies of Government to operate from common bases. My deputy, Dr. Emanuel Horowitz, and I have sought to build a program to meet the needs of the user community. Dr. Horowitz has been directly involved in many aspects of orthopedic implant development and has worked toward accelerating the development of much needed standards. Our conviction that nbs could make a unique contribution in this area is based upon a number of factors: our long tradi tion for work in failure analysis; our long association with the American Dental Association; and our multidisciplinary laboratory built around competences in chemistry and physics and focused on the properties of metals, ceramics, and polymers.
Though we believe that our competence base could be effectively utilized in improving the performance of implant materials, we are very mindful of the fact that standards and measurements are only a part of the problem. For this reason we have sought from the very first to operate through such groups and agencies as those represented here today.
