Item description from seller

Octavo, green cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, xii, 244 pp. Very Good, with light foxing to page edges; in a Very Good dust jacket with light edgewear. From dust jacket: Florida is, indeed, a "fair place." The only continental area of tropical life in the United States, it holds an invaluable heritage of plant and animal riches unmatched anywhere else. It is a land of rare and exotic vegetation, beautiful birds, gentle waterways. It is a tourist's paradise and an ecologist's dream. It is a also a land where armadillos lie in their shattered armour on the superhighways; where the harmless manatee is hunted illegally by pleasure-seeking vandals; where the alligator gives up his life and hide for the dictates of fashion; where the eagle and osprey and white ibis are driven from their nests by land-fill projects and poisoned by DDT. Throughout the state the delicate balance of nature is being destoryed by greed and ignorance. Beginning with a chapter on the state's natural history, the author describes the climate (including the devastating and important role of hurricanes), land formation, vegetation, animal life and fish, and covers the fascinating and little-known human history of Florida from the arrival of the Spanish to the make-up of the population today. He examines the threatened areas in detail, each region's uniqueness and irreplaceable resources, and the fforts that have been made (or must be made) for its preservation. Included are Rookery Bay, the Everglades, the Florida Keys, and the threat poed by the Cross-Florida Barge Canal. Florida, Floridiana, Conservation, Environmentalism, Florida History, Natural History. bslic.…
