This historical study chronicles George Crook’s efforts in the 1882–1886 campaigns against the Chiricahua and other Apache groups. It examines strategy, discipline, and the challenges of protecting civilians across a vast desert frontier, including debates over how best to pursue and influence the renegade bands.
What you’ll experience:
- Insights into military decisions, from defensive patrols to pursuit across difficult terrain.
- An emphasis on the role of Apache scouts and their crucial contributions to surrender and peace.
- Discussion of the tensions between different forms of warfare and negotiation.
- Context for the era’s broader battles over control of the Southwest borderlands.
Ideal for readers of military history and those interested in the human side of frontier conflicts, this edition helps you understand the long struggle for security and settlement in the American Southwest.
