4 7/8 in. x 7 7/8 in., handwritten poem on a sheet of laid paper. Central horizontal fold, some light tanning to the sheet. "I rest content" dedicated to fellow book lover, Paul Lemperly (1858-1939). Lemperly later helped publish this poem in "Vanities in Verse", Marion Press, 1897. Both were also book collectors and early, founding members of The Rowfant Club in Cleveland, Ohio. The manuscript poem is dated: November 10 [18]/91. " I rest content to P.L. I rest content, nor care a jot/ For that dull phrase 'the common lot.'/ I do not ask nor wish to rise./ Beyond the reach of friendly eyes-/ Such airy flight attracts me not./ The even gait, the jogging foot/ Best suits my slow and sober thought./ Though others pass with eager cares,/ I rest content./My ingle-nook, my book, my pot/ of Cavendish, my pillowed cot!/ These, Allah! are the things I prize!/ But keep them mine, the worldly wise/ May smile and say-no matter what-/ I rest content. November 10 [18]/91. [F. A. Hilliard]". Seller Inventory # ABE-5937854711
