Print on Demand. This book is a detailed examination of breathing in the upper regions of the lungs, conducted by the author and their team of researchers. Historically, scientists assumed equal participation of all lung areas in respiration, but this has never been properly investigated. The author's novel research method, involving the insertion of a catheter into the mediastinum, reveals that the upper third of the lungs plays a significantly smaller role in breathing than other regions. Furthermore, the structure and composition of the mediastinum suggest an explanation for this phenomenon: the upper part has a thicker wall, preventing the propagation of pressure changes that facilitate breathing in the lower regions. This book's insights have important implications for understanding respiratory dynamics, challenging long-held assumptions and opening new avenues for research. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Discover how breathing changes the pressure inside the chest, measured directly in the mediastinum posterior. This study uses catheters in rabbits to map inspiratory and expiratory shifts across different mediastinal regions, revealing surprising regional differences and the influence of surrounding structures on breathing.
Examine how the author tests the effects of air entering the mediastinum, the role of pleural integrity, and the meticulous controls used to distinguish true pressure differences from experimental artifacts. The work also discusses implications for understanding how intrathoracic pressure relates to blood pressure changes during respiration.
- Visualizes pressure curves from distinct mediastinal zones during breathing
- Describes experimental methods to control air leaks and validate results
- Shares observations on how upper versus lower mediastinal areas respond to inspiration
- Discusses connections between mediastinal pressure and cardiovascular dynamics
Ideal for readers interested in physiology, respiratory mechanics, and the history of intrathoracic pressure research.
