Residential Duct Systems HandbookDoes residential duct design feel overwhelming the moment you start dealing with airflow, static pressure, friction rates, duct sizing, and equipment matching?Have you ever wondered how load calculations, equipment selection, static pressure budgets, friction rates, duct sizing, fittings, returns, sealing, and balancing all come together into one duct system that actually keeps every room comfortable? Are you looking for a clear, practical, and professional guide that teaches residential duct design the way it is actually understood, planned, installed, and verified in real homes, renovations, and everyday HVAC field work? Residential Duct Systems Handbook is your complete, hands-on guide to understanding, designing, sizing, installing, and troubleshooting residential duct systems from start to finish. Whether you are a beginner entering the HVAC trade, an apprentice building confidence, a technician sharpening your design and service skills, a contractor reviewing system performance, a student learning the fundamentals, or a serious DIY reader seeking real working knowledge, this handbook gives you the structured, real-world instruction you need. Inside This Handbook, You Will Learn How to: Understand the physics of how air actually moves through ducts-pressure, velocity, volume (CFM), and friction-explained in plain languageConnect the full HVAC design ecosystem (Manual J, S, D, and T) so you see how load, equipment, ducts, and registers depend on one anotherTurn heating and cooling loads into the required airflow for every room, and sanity-check your numbers before you ever cut metalRead manufacturer blower performance tables and choose between single-speed, multi-speed (PSC), and variable-speed (ECM) equipment with confidenceBuild a static pressure budget-external static pressure, component drops, and available static pressure-the way real designers doCalculate friction rate and stay inside the acceptable "wedge" so your ducts are neither starved nor oversizedSize supply trunks, branches, runouts, and the chronically neglected return side, room by room, with proper velocity limits for quiet operationAccount for fittings, transitions, and equivalent length-the hidden resistance that quietly wrecks otherwise good designsDesign supply and return air properly, select registers and grilles, and avoid drafts, dead spots, and closed-door pressure problemsApply zoning and variable air volume (VAV) principles, seal and insulate for real efficiency, and meet modern energy code requirementsTest, balance, and commission a finished system-measuring airflow and static pressure, leakage testing, and verifying the design in the fieldTroubleshoot by symptom-hot and cold rooms, noise, weak airflow, high bills, short cycling, and humidity-by tracing every problem back to its real causeMore Than a Textbook-A Practical Field CompanionResidential Duct Systems Handbook is not just a book for reading through formulas and code language.
