Translated from the French with notes, historical and explanatory, by M. Kennelly, S.J. Cloth and card boards tightly bound with coloured thread. Red illustrations on the cover and rear boards. Volumes have small marks and scuffs to the covers, with some faint stains to the spines. Corners slightly bumped. Volumes have slight fading to the cloth near the spines, especially on Volumes 6 and 7. Note that ink has seeped through to the back of some plates, only effecting clear pages without text. Some plates slightly faded. Pages themselves are clean with light foxing. Small marks and faint fingerprints throughout, and faint marks to end-papers. Vol 1: Small tear in the corner of Plate 4. Small mark in the corner of Plate 6. Small marks in the corners of plate 14, 18, and corners of page 69. Small ink stain opposite page 142, small mark bottom of page 147. Vol 2: small mark corner of plate 66. Yellow mark top of plate 103 and small tear top of page 182. Small mark on plate opposite page 219. Vol 3. Small mark opposite page 261 and bottom page 278. Vol 5. Tearing at spine ends. Faint marks on plate 185 and 191. Small tear corner of page 549. Faint stain corner of plate 227. Vol 7. Small white mark on the cover. Slight tears at the spine ends These volumes are part of Henri Dore's award winning series on Chinese culture and art. One of the greatest illustrators of his time, Dore created this series to meet growing demand in the West for information on Chinese social life and customs.
