Print on Demand. This book delves into the crucial yet often overlooked process of transferring technology from research and development to industry. By analyzing case studies in Irish manufacturing, the author identifies the various channels through which new technologies enter the production process. The book demonstrates the critical role of personal contact in accessing technology, emphasizing direct communication with other firms as the primary source of innovation, both domestically and internationally. However, it also highlights the limited involvement of research institutes and universities in this technology transfer, despite their potential as innovation hubs. The author underscores the importance of understanding these technology transfer patterns and advocates for targeted interventions to enhance technology adoption and innovation within the manufacturing sector. This book provides valuable insights for policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers seeking to optimize the integration of new technologies into industrial operations, leading to increased competitiveness and economic growth. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

During the summers, of 1972, 1974, 1975 and 1976, 81 firms in 12 indus tries2 were approached and asked to cooperate in the study. From this ini tial sample, there were two outright refusals, and four firms disqualified themselves because they were no longer involved in manufacturing. The firms were distributed among 12 industries (table 1) and are representative only of those 12 industries. One must be cautious in generalizing the findings to all of Irish industry, but in many respects the results have stabilized and the author would be very surprised if any major changes result from the addition of the remaining 14 industries.
