Paperback. Rescue, Raise, & Release: Create Your Own Monarch Butterfly Experience by Hugh J. Pinckard is a comprehensive guide for anyone passionate about monarch butterfly conservation. It walks readers through the entire process of raising monarchs at home, from rescuing eggs and tiny caterpillars from endangered milkweed patches to caring for them through their remarkable metamorphosis-watching as they transform into vibrant chrysalis and emerge as winged adults. The book details practical techniques, like building affordable rearing enclosures, sourcing and planting milkweed (the monarchs' sole food source for caterpillars), and creating optimal conditions to avoid common pitfalls like disease or predation. Pinckard dives into the science of monarch biology, explaining their awe-inspiring migration across thousands of miles, their role as pollinators, and the urgent threats they face: dwindling milkweed habitats, pesticides, climate change, and illegal logging at wintering sites in Mexico. With clear, beginner-friendly instructions, it's a hands-on resource for hobbyists, teachers, parents, or conservationists, showing how even small-scale efforts can make a difference. The book also includes engaging anecdotes from Pinckard's own experiences, tips for involving kids in the process, and appendices packed with checklists, troubleshooting guides, milkweed species profiles, and links to conservation organizations. Whether you're in a backyard or a classroom, it inspires readers to nurture monarchs while learning about their fragile, wondrous life cycle and advocating for their survival. Rescue, Raise, & Release guides readers through nurturing monarch butterflies, migration and conservation, with practical tips and resources. This item is printed on demand.
