From the Author
In February, 1972, I reported for duty as an OV-10 forward air controller (FAC) with the 23rd TASS at Nakhon Phanom Airbase, Thailand. During that tour - over two years long I learned the meaning of war as I flew interdiction against the Ho Chi Minh Trail, worked close air support with Vietnamese troops in South Vietnam, Hmong troops on the Plain of Jars in Northern Laos, Cambodian troops along the Mekong River in Cambodia, and search and rescue operations for so many downed flyers. And in all of that, I learned a very fundamental principle about why men fight. After all the lofty talk about honor and national objectives is peeled away, the reason is really primordial. Men fight for one another. Nations may fight for all kinds of reasons, but the warriors who actually carry the burden of combat really do it for each other. And the airmen who flew in the last years of our nation's long involvement in the war in Southeast Asia were no different. We still there flew and fought hard in daily action. But the mission that meant the most, that always became first priority when it occurred was the rescue of a brother when he was downed by enemy fire. It was an act of faith that if one of us went down, the others would rally to get us out. It was the bond that held us together. It was that bond which brought Bat 21 Bravo and many others home. This story is dedicated to the rescue forces. The Jollys, Sandys, FACs, they were the keepers of the bond. And it honors the memory of the men lost in the crew of Covey 282. God bless them all.
