PLATO. The Republic of Plato. Edited with Critical Notes, Commentary and Appendices by James Adam, M.A., Honorary LL.D. of Aberdeen University, Fellow and Senior Tutor of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Complete in Two Volumes: Vol. I (Books I–V) and Vol. II (Books VI–X). Cambridge: At the University Press, 1905. Two volumes. Octavo (8vo). Original publisher’s cloth, gilt-lettered spines. Condition: Very Good. Both volumes have strong, square boards and tight bindings. The text blocks are fully intact, though there is some minor displacement of pages, without looseness or loss. Very slight shelf wear is visible, consistent with age. Bright gilt titles on both spines remain clear and legible. A small numeric reference in pencil is present on the front endpapers and inside the front boards. No further inscriptions, annotations, or markings. Overall, a clean, sound, and attractive complete set, particularly well preserved for books of this age. Notes: James Adam’s edition of The Republic is one of the most important and enduring works of Platonic scholarship in English. First published in 1902 and here offered in the 1905 Cambridge University Press printing, it provides a critically established Greek text supported by extensive commentary, critical notes, and scholarly appendices. Volume I covers Books I–V, addressing Plato’s foundational discussions of justice, the ideal state, and moral psychology. Volume II covers Books VI–X, including the theory of Forms, the philosopher-kings, the allegory of the cave, and Plato’s concluding arguments on education, art, and the soul. Complete sets in comparable condition are increasingly scarce, and this remains a standard reference for classical scholars and institutional libraries. Keywords (comma-separated) Plato, The Republic, James Adam, classical philosophy, ancient philosophy, Platonic studies, Greek philosophy, Cambridge University Press, early twentieth century scholarship, classical commentary, academic classics, antiquarian books, two volume set.…
