Item description from seller

Original black cloth, backstrip damaged and tenuously attached. Front board detached. The first section, Warren's Report, has considerable foxing. The maps in the larger second section have far less foxing. 116 pp., 11 plates (4 folding), 5 maps in the first section. 31 uncolored folding maps and profiles in the second section, lacking the general map from volume 2, profiles for the route surveyed by Beckwith and the Map and Profile of Tejon Pass. This is the critical atlas volume of the Railroad Surveys. It includes the many maps, profiles and surveys which were not issued in the individual survey reports. Present is the all-important Map of the Territory of the United States from the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean by Gouverneur Kemble Warren. Not all copies of Volume XI contained this map. Warren's report, dated 1859, is the first section of the book. Wheat 936 devotes 8 pages to this map in his monumental work Mapping the Trans-Mississippi West, referring to it as "an achievement of note" and "almost unnoticed among the great maps of the United States that preceded the Civil War." This is among the most indispensible volumes for any study of the cartography of the American West. Wagner-Camp 266c.…
