Print on Demand. This volume collects the correspondence of George Washington, a seminal American figure whose life and military career decisively shaped the course of his nation. Edited by Jared Sparks and annotated with insights from Chief Justice Marshall, the collection reveals Washington's character and motivations through his own words. Readers can trace the progression of his political and military thought through his letters to comrades and statesmen, while also discovering the ideological landscape of the American Revolution and the challenges of founding a new nation. This meticulous historical work restores Washington's words to their rightful place as a testament to the ideals that shaped America. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

But the heaviest charge is that of.making addi tions. This charge is entirely without foundation. Knowing that not a single line, or fragment of a line, was intentionally added to the original text, throughout the Whole twelve volumes of the work; I confess it was with no little surprise that I saw a passage quoted from a letter to Joseph Reed, as printed in Washington's Writings, and-declared by the writer in the Evening Post to be an invention of my own, the same not being found in What was supposed to be an exact copy of the original, printed in the Life and Correspondence of Joseph Reed. The following is the quotation.
