Authorized edition, with some debate whether the Harper's 1881 issue or this was the first American edition, or whether this edition was actually authorized at all. Worn copy of an important work containing material entrusted to the editor ten years before the author's death, with the provision that they be published only posthumously. Brown cloth over beveled boards, 536 pages plus advertisements. Considerable cover wear and rubbing, uneven fading. Front hinge barely cracked but text block sound with no loosened pages, short clean tear to front free endpaper, which has a name written in pencil. Faint dampstain to far outer margin of the first ninety pages, nowhere near the text. Clean pages overall. . Hard Cover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 001916

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good -. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, As Issued. First Edition. SCARCE in lovely fine binding stamp signed by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London for Marshall Field and Co. Thomas Carlyle, 1795-1881, was a Scottish essayist, satirist, and historian. Published a month after Carlyle's death by his literary executor, James Anthony Froude, to much controversy over the editing. They were republished in 1887 with Harvard professor Charles Eliot Norton as the editor. Two volumes in contemporary half calf over marbled boards, the calf undyed at the spines and dyed green at the covers to harmonize with the green marbled boards, backs gilt, marbled end papers, top edges gilt, wear showing at joints yet still holding nicely, small rubs at corners, interiors clean and bright.
