Spine faded. Some fraying to cloth at head of spine. Front free endpaper torn out. Foxing to frontispiece.; Stated "Second Edition". xii, 242 pages + frontispiece + [2] pages advertisements (dated March 1853). Original blind-stamped cloth boards, rebacked with later spine. Page dimensions: 198 x 120mm. The frontispiece is a steel engraving of Revd. John Edwards, South Africa. Wood engraved illustrations (3 full page). The 3 full page illustrations are "The Wagon In A Hole" (page 57); "Unpleasant Visitors" (lions, page 75); "Grahamstown" (page 143). In-text illustration on page 100 "Umpukani". Headpiece and tailpiece illustrations at beginning and end of chapters.
