Item description from seller
Language: English. About The Book: Religious Thought and Life in India by Sir Monier Monier-Williams is a detailed study of India's diverse religious traditions, based on his lifelong research and firsthand observations. The book explores Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and other faiths, analyzing their scriptures, rituals, and philosophies. Written from a colonial and missionary perspective, it seeks to interpret Indian religions for Western audiences, often advocating Christian evangelization. While insightful, the work reflects a Eurocentric bias, shaping Western perceptions of Indian spiritual traditions. About The Author: Sir Monier Monier-Williams (1819–1899) was a British scholar and the second Boden Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford. He specialized in Sanskrit, Persian, and Hindustani, emphasizing practical over speculative study. A strong advocate of Christian evangelization in India, he sought to document and influence Hinduism, predicting its decline. His works, including Hinduism (1877), helped popularize the term. Engaged in a fierce rivalry with Max Müller, he was known for his linguistic expertise and commitment to British colonial and missionary goals.
