About the Author:

Leopoldo Alas Clarin (1852-1901). Espana. Su padre era gobernador civil en Zamora. Comenzo sus estudios en Leon, en el colegio de los Jesuitas, y a los siete anos marcho a Oviedo. En 1871 ingreso en la Universidad de Madrid y continuo los estudios de Derecho y Filosofia que habia iniciado en Oviedo. Habia vivido la revolucion del 68 y fundo con sus companeros Tomas Tuero, Pio Rubin y Armando Palacio Valdes la tertulia de la Cerveceria Inglesa de la Carrera de san Jeronimo, llamada tambien Bilis Club por la agudeza de las criticas que en ella se hacian. En 1875 uso por primera vez el pseudonimo Clarin para firmar en El Solfeo. Tambien escribio en La Union, El Progreso, Gil Blas y La Espana Moderna. Hizo un periodismo agil y atrevido, en articulos que llamaba paliches. En 1882 fue nombrado catedratico de la Universidad de Zaragoza y al ano siguiente vivio en Oviedo, ciudad en la que provoco gran escandalo la publicacion de la novela La Regenta (1885), la cual, junto con Su unico hijo son consideradas las dos grandes novelas naturalistas espanolas del siglo. Estos libros retratan con dureza la sociedad provinciana de Vetusta, ciudad imaginaria semejante a Oviedo. Clarin murio en 1901.
