Item description from seller

Robison, Sophia M. Refugees at Work, 1943, studies refugees who entered the United States between 1933 and 1941 as Nazi persecution and war displaced populations across Europe, using employment and demographic data to test contemporary claims that newcomers displaced American workers or burdened the economy. Compiled at Eleanor Roosevelt's request, the study examines refugee population, nationality, geographic distribution, sex, marital status, occupation, and entrepreneurship. Its publication placed quantitative evidence into an American debate over refugees in which economic competition and national security were frequently invoked against admission, while Roosevelt's prefatory note explicitly sought to counter those fears with evidence about refugees already living and working in the United States. Robison, Sophia M. Refugees at Work. New York: King's Crown Press, 1943 [copyright 1942]. Second King's Crown printing. Prefatory note by Eleanor Roosevelt. Octavo. 83 pp. Original wrappers. Published for the Committee for Selected Social Studies through King's Crown Press, a division of Columbia University Press. Robison organizes the study into sections including "America's Refugee Population," "Refugee Entrepreneurs," individual "Close-Ups," and findings and conclusions. The research covers immigration from 1933 through 1941 and records refugees by nationality, residence, sex, marital status, and occupation, with particular attention to businesses founded by newcomers. Contemporary reporting on the study estimated approximately 150,000 refugees had entered the United States since Hitler's rise to power, about half settling in New York State; its survey of 828 refugee enterprises concluded that competition with American labor was negligible and that these businesses instead generated employment for American workers. Robison, who received her doctorate from Columbia University in 1936 and served as executive director of the National Council of Jewish Women from 1940 to 1942, brought social-science methodology and direct experience with Jewish communal organizations to a study published while the refugee crisis remained ongoing. Eleanor Roosevelt states in her prefatory note that she requested the investigation because of repeated questions about whether refugees constituted an economic or security threat, making the volume a contemporary intervention in American arguments over immigration during the Nazi era rather than a postwar assessment. The resulting tables, occupational data, entrepreneurial case studies, and demographic analysis preserve evidence about how refugees from Hitler's Europe entered American labor and commercial life before and during the first year of United States participation in World War II. Original wrappers with minor wear; very good overall.…
