Publication Date: 1790

Binding: Full Leather

Book Condition: Very Good

BOUND WITH "A Letter from Mr. Burke to a Member of the National Assembly, in Answer to Some Objections to His Book of French Affairs" The Second Edition, Paris, Printed, and London Re-printed for J. Dodsley, 1791. Pp. iv, 356; [ii], 74. Bound in contemporary, late 18th-century tree calf, expertly rebacked with the original gilt embellished spine strip laiddown, gilt-stamped maroon leather spine label. Previous owner's signature to front blank, and another early ink signature to title-page, otherwise interior clean, and fresh. Binding scuffed and worn but well preserved. Quite an appealing copy of the first edition, first issue of "Reflections". First published in 1790, Burke's brilliant polemic against the excesses of the French Revolution, which he accused of sacrificing means to ends, and betraying real liberty for the sake of bloodless abstractions of liberty, equality and fraternity, brought him great popularity among conservative forces in Europe and later America, though it earned him the rejection of his own Whig Party, and the lasting bafflement of social utopians everywhere. cf.
