This is a beautifully written memoir of an Irish childhood and of a son's relationship with his father, the 'quiet rebel' of the title. Recalling a time before the outbreak of the present troubles this is by turns passionate, moving and funny, yet never sentimental. This is less a book about Northern Ireland, of which a picture emerges through his father's unflagging optimism, than an evocative and poignant recollection of growing up.
