Print on Demand. This book incisively examines the concept of peace, tracing the evolution of its understanding over several decades. It explores the factors that have hindered its attainment, particularly the glorification of war as a heroic undertaking and the diplomatic tendency to seek national advantage at the expense of others. The author argues that such attitudes have fueled the rise of militarism, making peace appear trivial and unattainable. They highlight that true peace can only be achieved through a fundamental shift in societal values, emphasizing cooperation, mutual respect, and the renunciation of violence and conquest. This book is a valuable resource for those interested in peace studies, international relations, and the history of conflict resolution. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The articles in this volume have appeared in the Nation during the last thirty years, and are reprinted almost in chronological order. As a rule they treat of the principal non-political topics, both grave and gay, which during that period have attracted the attention of the American public. Some slight changes have been made in the text where lapse of time, or change of circumstances, seemed to obscure the sense. The concluding portion of the notice of John Stuart Mill, contain ing an appreciation of his philosophy, was written by Chauncey Wright, of Cambridge, whose early death twenty years ago was a severe loss to science as well as to his friends. There is, of course, always a question whether any collection of this sort can have permanent value. This I must leave the reader to answer for himself. I confess that the publishers' estimate of the articles has had more to do with their reproduction than my own.
