Print on Demand. This captivating novel transports readers to the heart of 17th century France, where an aristocratic lady, the Marquise de Polignac, grapples with a dangerous secret that could destroy her reputation. When the mysterious "Red Neighbor," a notorious purveyor of illicit potions and forbidden knowledge, is arrested and thrown into the infamous Conciergerie prison, the Marquise finds herself entangled in a web of intrigue and deceit. Desperate to protect her own reputation, she enlists the help of a cunning doctor, Dr. Levani, who offers to purchase the Red Neighbor's secrets in exchange for access to the imprisoned woman. As the doctor delves deeper into the Red Neighbor's world, he uncovers a hidden society of influential patrons who seek to exploit the power of the forbidden. The author paints a vivid portrait of a society on the brink of change, where the old order clashes with the rise of a new, more rational age. Through its exploration of illicit desires, social mores, and the limits of human nature, this book offers a profound meditation on power, morality, and the eternal struggle between tradition and progress. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
