Print on Demand. This intricately woven tale transports readers to the heart of 19th century Korea and its rich cultural tapestry. The author delves into the enigmatic world of Korean spirituality and the deep-rooted belief in the supernatural, particularly the veneration of 'miriok' fetishes. The story revolves around a group of missionaries embarking on a perilous journey up the Han River, their expedition fraught with unknown dangers and unexpected encounters. As the travelers navigate treacherous waters and encounter the enigmatic Mr. Kit-ze and his obsessive devotion to his miriok, the narrative explores the clash between Western rationalism and Eastern mysticism. The author deftly weaves together themes of cultural identity, the struggle between faith and superstition, and the enduring power of ancient beliefs in the face of modernity. This adventure through a foreign landscape invites readers to question their own beliefs and consider the enduring influence of tradition, leaving them with a profound appreciation for the rich complexities of human spirituality. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Korea has been called the Hermit Nation, as of all nations Tibet alone has exceeded it in repulsin g foreign influences. Only in 1882 did the United States secure a treaty, and that opened the country to foreign trade only in the capital, Seoul, and three ports. But in this treaty Korea was treated with as an inde pendent State, and its people are distinct from either Chinese or Japanese and well repay study and mission ary labors. This little story is one of the first to pre sent this slightly known land and its customs, and therefore deserves special attention from all who are interested in the Christiam'zing of Oriental nations.
