This book delves into the rich tapestry of colonial America, weaving a compelling narrative around the Dyer family and their pivotal role in shaping the early history of Rhode Island. Beginning with William and Mary Dyer's arrival in Boston fifteen years after the Mayflower Pilgrims, the author meticulously traces their journey amidst religious persecution and their embrace of the Quaker faith. Set against the backdrop of the Antinomian Controversy and the rise of religious tolerance in Rhode Island, the book explores the family's involvement in key historical events, including the founding of Newport and the struggle for religious freedom. The author's meticulous research brings to light the challenges faced by early colonists, their interactions with Native American tribes, and the complexities of colonial governance. Through the lives of William and Mary Dyer, and their descendants, this book offers profound insights into the themes of faith, courage, and the pursuit of liberty. It illuminates the sacrifices made by those who dared to challenge the established order and paved the way for a more inclusive and just society. Ultimately, this book serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Dyer family and their contributions to the foundation of American principles of freedom and tolerance. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. - Biography and Autobiography
Fifteen years after the Pilgrims of the Mayflower had landed on Plymouth Rock, we find the first record of William and Mary Dyre, in Boston. A family tradition says that two brothers and a sister - Edward, George, and Tabitha Dyre - came from England to Boston in the Mayflower, about 1627 or 1629. With them, were the son of one brother and the daughter of the other - William and Mary. The cousins married; when, it is not known. As it has been impossible to ascertain any other maiden name for Mary Dyre, the inference is that the tradition may be a correct one. Gerard Croese in his History of the Quakers, quaintly describes her as a person of no mean extract or parentage, Of an estate pretty plentiful, Of a comely stature and countenance, Of a piercing knowledge in many things, of a wonderful sweet and pleasant dis course. Governor John Winthrop, in his Journal dated 1638, speaks Of her as a very promp, and fair woman, Of a very proud spirit. Thus, says Drake in his New England Legends, we have, in her.
