Recording Unhinged: Creative and Unconventional Music Recording Techniques by producer and engineer Sylvia Massy is a creative music recording guide for producers, engineers, and musicians who want to move beyond conventional studio methods. Blending real-world studio experience with imaginative exploration, this book challenges traditional approaches and encourages readers to rethink how sound is captured, shaped, and expressed in music production.
This illustrated reference combines practical insight with artistic perspective for both aspiring and experienced audio professionals. Readers will find recording techniques, studio experiments, diagrams, session stories, and interviews with influential figures such as Hans Zimmer, Al Schmitt, and Dave Pensado, alongside Sylvia Massy’s distinctive artwork that expands the book’s unconventional spirit.
This guide supports developing and established audio professionals by offering fresh ways to approach tracking, mixing, and sound design. It provides inspiration for capturing expressive performances, building distinctive sonic identities, and breaking creative barriers that often limit studio work. The unconventional ideas presented help reinvigorate workflows and encourage confident experimentation.
With stories, tips, advice, diagrams, exercises, quotes, and interviews, the book explores recording approaches across vocals, bass, drums, guitar, piano and organ, strings, horns and orchestra, keys, synths and samplers, percussion, other noise, and mixing, offering a distinctive reference for creative studio work.
Whether used as a studio reference, a source of creative prompts, or a thoughtful gift for music enthusiasts, Recording Unhinged offers a distinctive perspective on recording and invites readers to explore new techniques, challenge assumptions, and bring a more personal touch to every project.
