John Pitts’ Recorder from the Beginning Book 1 is a structured beginner recorder tutor created for children aged 7 to 11 who are learning music for the first time. This full colour edition introduces young players to the recorder through clear, progressive lessons that combine familiar tunes with original pieces, helping children build confidence while developing essential musical skills. Suitable for classroom learning, home study, or individual practice, the book presents recorder technique in an approachable way without requiring previous musical knowledge.
The course gradually introduces the first six notes through a mixture of melodies, rounds, rhythm exercises, and simple practice pieces designed especially for beginner recorder players. Introductory music theory and easy-to-follow explanations help children develop reading, timing, coordination, and listening skills while enjoying an engaging introduction to music-making. The revised full colour edition also includes additional tunes and extra practice material to support steady progress and continued interest.
Teacher support features such as simple piano accompaniments, guitar chord symbols, and classroom percussion suggestions make the book especially useful for schools and group learning environments. Its careful pacing and accessible presentation help young musicians stay motivated while building strong foundations in recorder playing and basic musicianship.
The familiar songs and short exercises encourage consistent improvement without overwhelming beginners, making this book a popular choice for music teachers, parents, and primary school students. Children can develop musical confidence and essential performance skills while enjoying a rewarding introduction to the recorder.
