Print on Demand. This book delves into the concept of zero-crossings in scale-space, a significant area of study in computer vision. It explores the ability of zero-crossings to represent and reconstruct signals and images. The author begins by providing a survey of the analytical results and studies related to zero-crossings, examining their completeness and stability as a representation for image data. The book then formulates a new method for reconstructing signals and images from zero-crossings that utilizes equation error minimization, presenting results demonstrating the feasibility of the approach. Additionally, the author discusses the significance of gradient data along zero-crossings for enhancing the stability of the reconstruction. The book concludes with a comprehensive discussion of the theoretical foundations and practical applications of zero-crossings in scale-space, offering valuable insights for researchers and practitioners in computer vision and image processing. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. …

The discussion frames a mathematical analysis of representations, including how they depend on the initial data and how stable reconstructions can be. It covers continuous and discrete formulations, the Heat Equation, and iterative methods that minimize data error. Readers will see how zero-crossings interact with gradient data, and how these ideas apply to real images and noisy measurements.
- Learn how scale-space concepts and Gaussian pyramids support feature detection and analysis.
- Understand reconstruction from zero-crossings and the role of right inverses in representations.
- Explore equation-error minimization and gradient-based iterative reconstruction techniques.
- See practical considerations, including noise handling and partial gradient data, in experiments.
Ideal for readers of vision science, pattern recognition, and image processing who want a rigorous, applied look at intermediate representations and their reconstruction.
