From the Author
This is the review (long, I admit -- please feel free to print any piece, or pieces, of it) printed in the May 1998 "Quality Progress" magazine, the magazine of the American Society for Quality (the review was written by Wayne Sander): Thank you. Who would think these two little words could make a difference in a company's profitability, quality levels, and employee morale. But that is exactly what this book is about. When was the last time your boss or an upper manager thanked you in the workplace? This is not a fleeting thank you, but one that comes from the heart, is sincere, and you know the person means it. In this power-packed little book the authors do an excellent job of conveying how saying "thank you" to employees regularly, with meaning and sincerity, pays big financial and psychological dividends. The authors have done an outstanding job of proving that there are thousands of ways to say thank you and show appreciation to employees. The book begins with an explanation of why saying thank you is good business practice. Townsend and Gebhardt point out that saying thank you is not always easy and at times feels unnatural. Fortunately, managers and leaders can be trained for this task, and the book offers numerous examples of how this can be accomplished. The authors continue with several cautions, one being that saying thank you requires planning. They emphasize that no two employee recognition programs are identical. They are, however, similar in that they all say thank you in a variety of ways and with a personal touch. Another caution is that saying thank you does not always sound the same to everyone. It should be personal. The book offers suggestions on how to plan and make use of the practice-makes-perfect theory, since the first thank you is often the hardest. Moving on, there is a section devoted to proven principles and successful practices that can be adapted when planning how and when to say thank you. This section gives practical advice and insight on how saying thank you can be made fun. But as the authors profoundly state, recognition is not based on luck or fate; it takes hard work and professional planning. The remainder of the book focuses on real examples of companies that have implemented successful recognition programs. These examples are laced with ideas that will get a savvy upper manager drooling over the success these companies have experienced just by saying thank you. This book is good reading for anyone in a supervisory or management role, but especially for upper managers and human resources personnel interested in getting the most from something as natural and human as saying thank you.
