Paperback. Recognised as SuchA Ceremonial Anthropology of RecognitionReceiving the Mason in Eighteenth-Century French FreemasonryWhat if eighteenth-century Masonic ritual was never intended to transform the individual?For more than a century, historians and Freemasons alike have tended to interpret ritual as a symbolic, initiatory, or esoteric process through which the candidate undergoes an inner transformation. Yet the original manuscripts of the Rite de Maconnerie francaise suggest a very different understanding of what ritual was designed to accomplish.Drawing on the complete manuscript tradition of 1784-1786, Marc F. Meisner argues that one of the most influential ritual systems of eighteenth-century Europe was not primarily concerned with personal transformation. Instead, it functioned as a ceremonial order of reception, recognition, verification, and transmission.The candidate was not transformed: he was received.The brother was not regenerated: he was recognised.The purpose of ritual was not to change the individual but to establish and maintain the recognised relationships through which a Masonic community preserved its continuity across time.Seen from this perspective, the Temple appears in a new light. Rather than serving chiefly as a symbolic space awaiting interpretation, it becomes the visible setting in which participation is organised, membership is recognised, authority is exercised, and continuity is publicly maintained.Based on the original manuscripts authenticated in 1787 and the critical edition of the Seven Degrees of the Rite de Maconnerie francaise, this book offers the first sustained examination of French Freemasonry as a system of ceremonial recognition rather than a programme of inner transformation.Topics include: - the manuscript transmission of the Rite and the distortions introduced by later printed rituals;- the reception of the candidate and the construction of recognised membership;- the Temple as an order of ritual participation;- the Mysterious Tracing Board and the organisation of ritual visibility;- the regulation of speech, silence, and authority;- ceremonial memory and the continuity of ritual forms;- the European Republic of Lodges and its mechanisms of mutual recognition;- the foundations of a ceremonial anthropology of recognition.More than a study of Freemasonry, this book addresses a broader question that has confronted societies throughout history: How do communities preserve continuity, legitimacy, and collective identity while remaining composed of free individuals?Combining archival research, ritual history, intellectual history, and anthropological analysis, Recognised as Suchchallenges some of the most deeply rooted assumptions about Masonic ritual and offers a new interpretation of how eighteenth-century Freemasonry understood membership, authority, transmission, and social order.An important contribution to the study of ritual, sociability, and the history of Freemasonry. Recognised as Such
A Ceremonial Anthropology of Recognition
Receiving the Mason in Eighteenth-Century French Freemasonry
- What if eighteenth-century Masonic ritual was never intended to transform the individual?
For more than a century, historians and Freemasons alike have tended to interpret ritual as a symbolic, initiatory, or esoteric process through which the candidate undergoes an inner transformation. Yet the original manuscripts of the Rite de Maçonnerie française suggest a very different understanding of what ritual was designed to accomplish.
Drawing on the complete manuscript tradition of 1784–1786, Marc F. Meisner argues that one of the most influential ritual systems of eighteenth-century Europe was not primarily concerned with personal transformation. Instead, it functioned as a ceremonial order of reception, recognition, verification, and transmission.
The candidate was not transformed: he was received.
The brother was not regenerated: he was recognised.
The purpose of ritual was not to change the individual but to establish and maintain the recognised relationships through which a Masonic community preserved its continuity across time.
Seen from this perspective, the Temple appears in a new light. Rather than serving chiefly as a symbolic space awaiting interpretation, it becomes the visible setting in which participation is organised, membership is recognised, authority is exercised, and continuity is publicly maintained.
Based on the original manuscripts authenticated in 1787 and the critical edition of the Seven Degrees of the Rite de Maçonnerie française, this book offers the first sustained examination of French Freemasonry as a system of ceremonial recognition rather than a programme of inner transformation.Topics include:
- • the manuscript transmission of the Rite and the distortions introduced by later printed rituals;
- • the reception of the candidate and the construction of recognised membership;
- • the Temple as an order of ritual participation;
- • the Mysterious Tracing Board and the organisation of ritual visibility;
- • the regulation of speech, silence, and authority;
- • ceremonial memory and the continuity of ritual forms;
- • the European Republic of Lodges and its mechanisms of mutual recognition;
- • the foundations of a ceremonial anthropology of recognition.
Combining archival research, ritual history, intellectual history, and anthropological analysis, Recognised as Suchchallenges some of the most deeply rooted assumptions about Masonic ritual and offers a new interpretation of how eighteenth-century Freemasonry understood membership, authority, transmission, and social order.
An important contribution to the study of ritual, sociability, and the history of Freemasonry.
