Print on Demand. This book examines the inner workings of local government in the early modern period through the lens of Rennes, a prominent city in the Duchy of Brittany. Based on extensive archival research, the author analyzes the intricate relationship between royal officials, municipal leaders, and the wider community, shedding light on the complex interplay of power and authority during this transformative era. By examining the roles of the mayor, councilors, and other civic officers, this book provides valuable insights into the daily governance of early modern cities, the challenges they faced, and the strategies they employed to manage urban affairs. Ultimately, it underscores the significance of local institutions in shaping the political and social landscape of pre-revolutionary France. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
