Print on Demand. The pursuit of 'right living' requires an understanding of the ultimate problems in human life and consideration of all the facts that enter into it. This book discusses the relationship of ethical ideas to the conduct of life, and the importance of a consistent conception of all that is, or a philosophy of life, rejecting the widespread false dichotomy between 'this world' and the next. Scientific inquiry should not be carried out solely for its own sake but to enrich our understanding of the world and thus improve our ability to live in it, while philosophy, far from being an abstruse and impractical pursuit, is simply the theory of the universe as a whole, consistent with all that is. It is important to have an ideal or theory of conduct in life, but our ideals should be based on the whole of reality, not on the imperfect apprehensions of earlier times. Accordingly, we need to test our ideals against a broad understanding of the world in which we live, and be willing to alter those ideals when necessary. In this way, we can move closer to a true philosophy of life, one that will help us to lead more rational and fulfilling lives. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Lastly, as to the relations between happiness and Virtue, we are taught that the joys of sense can con tribute very little to happiness. Egoism is good, but only so far as it is intelligent. The power to enjoy grows directly as does capacity for sympathy. Even non-moral pleasures may be made means to moral enjoyment. To be true to our own selves brings a joy that abides, for the welfare of society is only the sum of that of the individuals composing it. The value of a sound education is that it makes for Virtue, and this is the author's melioristic creed. The greatest happi ness for us is not beyond the reach of our power to attain it. Love is the highest, and it teaches us the transcendent beauty of the universe.
