Seeing Through Their Eyes is Volume 21 in the annual Real Women Write anthology series from Story Circle Network, a nonprofit organization that supports women writers and celebrates the importance of women’s stories. In 2020 and 2021, our anthologies were focused on living with COVID, and on the future after the pandemic. In 2022, the persistence of COVID has become clear. Thanks to vaccines, anti-viral medications, testing and masks, people are adapting to that ongoing threat. Now attention has turned to other dangers, such as climate change and its disasters, war in Ukraine leading to increased global famine, economic fall-out from COVID and corporate greed, and escalating gun violence. We are nearly numb to disasters. Yet we’re learning, too, about what humans can do to make things better. As we consider how to make a difference, so that we don’t grow numb and we continue to take care of each other and the planet, developing the quality of empathy is vital. It naturally became the theme of this volume, and the idea inspired a wide range of stories and poems in our member-contributors. In these 75 works of prose and poetry by 49 writers, you will surely find responses that speak to you.
As renowned author Marita Golden says in her Foreword, “The narratives in this collection dive into the deep end of the pool, where the water is wide and deep and where you discover what you are made of. What you can do. These essays urge you to turn away from your cell phone, television, or computer screen, to hear the real breaking news — that we are in this life and in this world together. We must love one another. These narratives show how we can love one another.”
As always, SCN understands the value of diversity, and we celebrate that in Seeing Through Their Eyes with over six dozen unique approaches to the subject of empathy, forming a readable chorus that creates unanticipated harmony from individual voices. Together, this extraordinary group of writings offers creative insight into 21st century women’s experiences, and it will have impact for years to come, serving as a significant addition to the herstory and literature of our time.
