Tornadoes can feel big and scary for little ones—but learning how to stay safe doesn’t have to be.
Getting Ready for a Tornado gently teaches children what tornadoes are, how weather scientists help keep us safe, and what to do during a tornado warning—all in a reassuring, child-friendly way.
Severe weather can feel confusing for kids. This book helps turn uncertainty into confidence by teaching them how to recognize storm clues, follow safety steps, and prepare for tornadoes with calm and courage.
The mission of this book is to provide your child with the following:
• Learn what tornadoes are and why they happen in a simple, age-appropriate way that makes weather science easy to understand.
• Recognize signs that a tornado may be forming, helping children become more aware of changes in the weather around them.
• Understand how to stay safe during a tornado warning using clear, practical steps such as going to a safe place, protecting their head and neck, and staying away from windows.
• Empower your child with knowledge and confidence so they know what to do and feel more in control during severe weather situations.
• Encourage open conversations with family members and teachers about tornado safety plans and emergency preparedness.
• Reduce anxiety and fear about storms through calm, supportive language and reassuring explanations.
• Build confidence through preparedness, helping children see safety as something they can practice and learn—making it feel natural rather than scary.
With engaging prompts, interactive moments, and a gentle tone, Getting Ready for a Tornado helps children feel calm, capable, and ready when storms happen.
