Synopsis:

Reading Social Research: Studies in Inequalities and Deviance consists of a collection of 20 studies, carefully chosen to represent a broad range of approaches and methods of contemporary social research. Selected journal articles and book excerpts illustrate the relationship between theory and research, the ethical and political dimensions of research, methods of selecting cases and measuring concepts, and various ways of gathering and analyzing data. Organized in 10 units, each unit introduces the methodological topic, provides Web resources related to the topic, presents two reading selections, and then poses questions to assess students′ understanding of the researchers′ methodology. Focusing on issues of race/ethnicity, gender, class, and crime and deviance, the readings expose students to substantive topics fundamental to, and at the forefront of, the social sciences. In addition, the readings provide examples of both qualitative and quantitative social research; are rigorous applications of methodological concepts; and are abridged carefully to make them accessible to students.

About the Authors: Jeff Dixon received his PhD in Sociology from Indiana University, with a minor in research/quantitative methods, and also holds a BS in Secondary Education from Wright State University. His previous research has appeared in such journals as Social Forces, Public Opinion Quarterly, British Journal of Sociology, International Migration Review, Social Science Quarterly, The Journal of Political and Military Sociology, and Teaching Sociology. His current research examines public opinion toward European Union (EU) enlargement, job security, and liberal-democratic values in the EU and Turkey. As an assistant professor at College of the Holy Cross, Dixon teaches seminars on the European Union and Turkey, as well as research methods, sociological perspectives, and "social class and power".

Royce A. Singleton, Jr. is a Professor of Sociology at the College of the Holy Cross. Currently, he serves on the editorial board of Sociological Perspectives, official journal of the Pacific Sociological Association, and on the Institutional Review Board at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. During the past year he has reviewed manuscripts for several journals and reviewed a film for Teaching Sociology. He is the author of numerous publications on research methods and race relations.
