From the Author
Ecocriticism is a scholarly approach to literature that is rapidly building momentum and legitimacy because of its usefulness as a means of inquiry into the relationship between human culture and the nonhuman world. This collection of original essays suggests ways in which creative, informed examination of the vital connections between literature and nature can enrich the value of literary studies for both academic and general readers. Implicit (and often explicit) in much of this criticism is a call for cultural change, a more biocentric world-view, and a broadening of humans' conception of global community to include nonhuman life forms and the physical environment. The essays are remarkably readable and jargon-free, and the emphases on classroom teaching and direct engagement with landscape make this book valuable for both college and secondary school instructors curious about how to include and work with environmental texts in their curricula. Increasingly, readers both within and outside the academy have come to appreciate intimate connections between word and world, art and nature, book and earth. This collection demonstrates promising new directions in the study of literature and environment and suggests the importance and passion of this scholarly enterprise.
