From the Author
The ancient Greeks believed that Night and Air united and gave birth to the three Fates. Robbed in white, the three sisters determine the destiny of all humans. Clotho is the spinner of life. For each man and woman, she spins a fine linen thread on her spindle. Lachesis is the measurer of life. She determines the worth of the thread, deciding if it will be woven into goodness or evil. Atropos, the shearer of life, is the smallest and most terrible of the sisters. She determines how long each mortal's life will be, then snips the thread.
The stories in this collection are all about people who in someway tempt Fate. Some are written by classic authors, like Chaucer and Nathaniel Hawthorne and Ambrose Bierce. Others are written by award-winning contemporary authors, like Stephen King and Henry Slesar and Richard Matheson. But what all the stories share in common is this: each has a surprise twist ending!
What is Read magazine? Read is a literature magazine published 18 times during the school year by Weekly Reader Corporation. The magazine is for students in grades 6 through 10 (or higher!) In the year 2000, Read will celebrate its 50th publishing anniversary and the Best of Read book series is a collection of the very best stories--both fiction and nonfiction--that have appeared in the magazine over the years! Enjoy!
