Fractured fairy tales combine with postmodern storytelling in this uproarious, oversize picture book with bright illustrations. Beginning with the title’s command, the text directly involves the reader. A huge, bossy, idiotic king telephones his storyteller, furious that his story is late. Unfortunately, the writer has lost his notes. The king reiterates that he wants the tale to be about a handsome, brave, smart king. What is this about a pea? The collage pictures in blazing colors are just right for scenes of the king threatening to put the reader in the dungeon if he does not go away. But whose gigantic foot is at the bottom of the page? Who is saying “Fe fi fo fum”? Why is there a request for 15 mattresses? Why is the wolf in a pink nightdress? Not for the usual picture-book fairy-tale crowd, this is for readers who already know the classic stories and will enjoy the parodies and rebellious chaos, especially their own defiance just by turning the pages. Grades 2-4. --Hazel Rochman
