Reimbursement of Jewish property was a central past-political conflict between the Federal Republic of Germany and the surviving Jews after the end of World War II. The end of the Cold War once again fanned this dispute as the property question in connection with the constitution of civil societies in Eastern Europe and the international reparation debate held since the mid-1990s has come to a central place. Jürgen Lillteicher links the investigation of the political process with the consideration of reimbursement practice and thus provides an innovative approach to this current time-historical as well as political issue. Included are German and Allied politics, German society and, in a transnational perspective, the Jewish refund authorities. Lillteicher analyzes not only the legal and political dimension of property transfer, but also the refund as a social experience and its importance for the reconstitution of Jewish existence after 1945.
