Item description from seller

223pp, [1]. Uncut, in early roughly-sewn wrappers over original blue-paper wraps. Loss to over-wraps, some rounding to edges and occasional soiling of text block. John William Fletcher (bap. 1729, d.1785), Anglican clergyman and Methodist writer. Fletcher and his wife, Mary Bosanquet Fletcher, were friends of John and Charles Wesley. One of the earliest theologians of the Methodist movement, he was chosen by John Wesley to be successor, had he not predeceased the latter. A Rational Vindication, a defence of traditional Trinitian orthodoxy, was published posthumously after completion by Joseph Benson. Imprints exist at both London and Hull; both are rare. ESTC records only three locations holding this provincial printing in the UK (Birmingham, BL, Dr. William's Library) and four in North America (Perkins School of Theology, Texas, Union Theological Seminary and Washington & Lee University). ESTC T99997 Size: 8vo.

Store description

Established 2007, Antiquates Ltd is an Antiquarian bookseller with a large, custom built shop in the heart of the Dorset countryside. We sell fine and rare books from our Wareham shop, in catalogues, and via our website (www.antiquates.co.uk). Specialising in early printed books both English and Continental, fine English Literature, and books by, for, and about Women and Children, we nevertheless stock a wide range of works on paper from 1500-present - including modern first editions. Our bias is towards the unusual, the interesting and the important - and always have a good stock of rare books by local authors such as T.E. Lawrence and Thomas Hardy; we are just the place if you're looking for an extra-special gift for a wedding, birthday, anniversary or graduation. (Open Wednesday - Saturday, 10am-4pm)…
