Stonegate has water for days, food for weeks, and trust for less than either.
Two months after the collapse, Daniel Mercer's emergency roster has become a ration government. Every household receives a place in line. Every share is recorded. Every number hides a private need.
Then fourteen-year-old Mason Keene dies after taking an unverified pill from the barter market. The packaging resembles controlled medicine that vanished during a clinic transfer, and anger turns toward the neighborhood's best-prepared family. They have food, fuel, and locked doors. They also refuse inspection.
Grant Heller demands house-to-house searches. Hungry residents demand confiscation. Daniel tries to restrain both with written warrants, two signatures, and an appeal that comes only after the search is finished. Yet the evidence is drawing closer to someone he loves, forcing him to choose whether equal rules matter when his own family may pay the price.
As rumor becomes testimony and procedure becomes force, an innocent refugee family is trapped inside the authority Daniel designed. The truth could save them, destroy his sister, and expose the ration line as a system that protects whoever controls its records.
