Add to basketLimited Edition of 'Two Hundred And Fifty copies of this book on Dutch hand-made paper privately printed by Frederic Fairchild Sherman' (Mr. Sherman was an art collector, critic, and historian. He was also a private publisher). Once listed, this will be the Only non-library copy of this book for sale anywhere on the Internet (there is only one other copy for sale, a library book). This book was previously owned by Carlton M. Barlow, an executive at General Dynamics. On a sheet of General Dynamics stationary Mr. Barlow has penned a note regarding appraisals of one of the paintings in the book, Indian Encampment. The painting was, at the time, residing at the Metropolitan Museum Of Art, Hearn Collection. You can see the covers in the photos. Quite nice shape for 1914. There's only the slightest bit of wear, a small bump/crease at the bottom corners of the front and rear, just a little rubbing at the spine ends, a slight dent on the spine. The lettering on both the front and spine looks very good. The cover edges look very good. The corners as well. The top page edge is gilt. The middle and bottom page edges are deckled or rough-cut. The book is solidly bound. There are four blank front end papers following the first brown end paper. Between the second and third blank front end papers there is one of those blending thin vertical strips of paper that was likely placed there to give added support at the juncture, although book pages seem very nicely tightly bound. There are no other such strips anywhere else. The pages are nicely, tightly bound throughout, as are the covers. There are no binding issues. Here is something very interesting: If you hold up the third blank end paper to the light you can see some sort of colorless design with FFS in the middle (that would obviously be Frederick Fairchild Sherman) and the word Holland at the top of it. The rear side of the fourth blank end paper and the facing rear side of the frontispiece both have some spotting/foxing. That's also the case with the white margins of the color frontispiece and with the tissue guard that protects it. To a lesser extent, there is some amber-colored toning at the margins of the title page. And now I'm noticing and can make out the design just referenced, because it's printed at the middle of the title page. The foxing comes to a complete end at the title page and reoccurs only very lightly on the rear side of the third and last blank rear end paper. And now I'm noticing that a blank rear end paper, the limitation page, and the page prior to the first page of Part One have that same FFS design. Clearly the publisher wanted everyone to know who made this book possible, although the design is so light you can hardly see it. The pages are exceptionally clean. They are numbered up to 40. I'm not finding any soiling. They are in nice condition. There aren't any placeholder creases. I'm not seeing any conspicuous creasing. There aren't any losses. There is one small closed tear off the outer edge of one page with an illustration, far from the illustration. The frontispiece is in color. Eight of the paintings within the text are in black and white, the ninth one is in color. There is a captioned tissue guard in front of each of the illustrated pages. They are all in excellent condition, only the last one has a tiny imperfection, a little crease just above the tip of its bottom corner. All the reproductions are in excellent condition. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no writing anywhere. 'Ralph Albert Blakelock was a romanticist American painter known primarily for his landscape paintings related to the Tonalism movement.' 'Elliott Daingerfield was an American artist who lived and worked in North Carolina. He is considered one of North Carolinas most prolific artists.
