Print on Demand. This book examines railway co-operation in the United States, focusing on railway traffic associations and cooperation among competing railways from the 1800s through 1899. It explores how early railway combinations emerged as a means to solve the problems of competition, excessive competition leading to rate wars, personal and place discrimination, and other economic and social forces that shaped the railway industry. The author highlights failed attempts by railroads to maintain harmonious relations and avoid losses, despite public opposition to rate agreements and division of competitive traffic. The author concludes that despite the challenges, cooperation among competing railways is essential to provide equitable charges, stable rates, and efficient rail service, arguing that beneficial cooperation can be achieved without compromising public interest or creating dangerous railway monopolies. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

This prize was established in 1896 by Mr. Henry C. Terry, of Philadelphia, in honor of his son, Willis Terry, who died suddenly two months after graduating from the Wharton School.
