21.5 x 14 cm. 192 pp. preceded by title-page and seven unnumbered pages each with an engraving and quote from a notable person: Washington Irving, Thomas Hood, Charles Dickens, Justice Halliburton ("Sam Slick"), Mr Hobler, Lord Brougham, and Mr J.C. Appleby. The title page has an engraved portrait of Sydney Smith. Gold-blocked faded blue boards, no dw. Boards a little rubbed, and some wear to spine extremities. There is a crested bookplate "H.M." on the front pastedown. Overall in good condition. A nice example of the sort of book produced for reading on early trains. The anecdotes are varied and light.
