Volume 5: Digital Electronics, SDR and Advanced Radio Techniques completes the Radio Electronics for Amateur Radio Operators series by bringing together modern digital electronics, advanced RF measurement techniques, troubleshooting methodology, construction practices, and essential safety principles used in today's amateur radio stations.
The book begins with advanced electronic test equipment used by experienced operators, experimenters, and RF engineers. Readers learn how spectrum analyzers measure signals, harmonics, spurious emissions, and occupied bandwidth while vector network analyzers (VNAs) provide precise measurements of impedance, filters, antennas, and transmission lines. Additional chapters explain signal generators, Q meters, RLC bridges, time-domain reflectometers, and advanced calibration procedures, giving readers the confidence to evaluate, diagnose, and optimize complex RF systems.
The second section introduces the digital electronics that form the foundation of modern communication equipment. Binary and hexadecimal number systems, logic gates, truth tables, flip-flops, counters, shift registers, analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion, sampling theory, digital signal processing, software-defined radio (SDR), FIR and IIR filters, and the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) are explained through practical examples that connect digital theory to real amateur radio applications.
Interference and noise receive comprehensive treatment with chapters covering thermal noise, noise figure, receiver noise floor, signal-to-noise ratio, dynamic range, intermodulation distortion, third-order intercept performance, reciprocal mixing, desensitization, blocking, common RF interference sources, shielding, bonding, ferrite suppression techniques, common-mode currents, differential-mode noise, and proper station grounding. Readers learn how to identify and eliminate interference problems while improving receiver performance and transmitter cleanliness.
Construction techniques are presented from the perspective of building reliable RF equipment. Topics include selecting soldering equipment, choosing solder and flux, producing high-quality solder joints, desoldering methods, through-hole and surface-mount construction, Manhattan and Ugly construction techniques, RF layout principles, PCB grounding, decoupling, wire gauge selection, and current-carrying capacity. Practical guidance helps readers avoid common construction errors while improving reliability and performance.
A dedicated troubleshooting section teaches systematic fault-finding methods used by professional technicians and experienced amateurs. Readers learn divide-and-conquer troubleshooting, signal injection, signal tracing, substitution methods, in-circuit voltage and current measurements, oscilloscope-based RF troubleshooting, common equipment failures, and complete worked repair examples for transceivers and typical amateur radio accessories. The emphasis is on logical diagnosis rather than replacing parts through trial and error.
The book concludes with one of the most important subjects in amateur radio-safety. Electrical shock hazards, lethal voltages in radio equipment, capacitor discharge dangers, RF exposure, RF burns, tower climbing safety, lightning protection, battery safety, chemical hazards, and safe workshop practices are discussed in detail to help readers protect themselves while building, repairing, and operating radio equipment.
Throughout the book, advanced engineering concepts are presented using clear explanations, detailed illustrations, practical calculations, worked examples, review questions, and hands-on exercises that reinforce both theory and practical application. Readers gain not only technical knowledge but also the confidence to troubleshoot complex systems, build reliable equipment.
