FIRST EDITION (1938), small 4to, 255 x 190 mm, 10 x 8 inches, spine 40 mm (1½") thick, frontispiece in full colour, illustrated throughout in green, blue, red, brown and black and white, text printed in several colours, pages unnumbered but collated and guaranteed complete, original publisher's coloured pictorial glazed boards: Rupert and elephant on swings with badger and rabbits on upper cover, fruit store on lower cover, pictorial endpapers. Tiny bump to both top corners, slightest wear to head and tail of spine, 2 minute grazes to background of coloured frontispiece plus 2 small grazes to inner margin, page edges slightly darkened, otherwise an almost Fine clean unmarked copy in very bright binding. The stories: Rupert's Holiday; A Christmas Pudding for Rupert; Rupert and the Old Miser, Rupert's Christmastide; Rupert and the Fairy Child; Rupert and the Mince Pies; and Rupert and the Wise Goat's Party. Later reprints have red cloth spines, see The New Rupert Index by Lofts and Adley, revised by John Beck, page 97. This title is often in poor condition due to its fragile spine. Written and illustrated by Alfred Bestall, a British author who wrote and illustrated Rupert Bear for the London Daily Express, from 1935 to 1965. In the original pictorial paper covered boards. Externally, smart with light wear and minor chipping to the extremities. Sunning to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Minor loss to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd colour pencil or ink mark. Some illustrations have been coloured in. Small ink marks to the endpapers and title page. Minor age toning to the odd page. Good. book.
