Title: THE ROSE
Publisher: James R. Osgood, Boston
Publication Date: 1878
Binding: Hardcover
Seller: Cat's Curiosities, Pahrump, NV, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 15 B&W illustrations, most by C.S. Reinhart, A.V.S. Anthony, Mary Hallock Foote, and R. Swain Gifford, all engraved by A.V.S. Anthony (illustrator). This book is in "fair" condition; it's an authentic 1878 printing with handsome title blocked in gilt to front board, but boards show considerable rub and the first two blank pages -- one exhibiting dual Christmas gift inscriptions dated 1882 and 1978, respectively -- have separated and are now laid in loose. (Re-tipping these pages with glue would be inappropriate, as this 12mo has a string-sewn binding.) All Edges Gilt. Second gift inscription, dated 1978, is to a Miss Nancy Yost. A Nancy Yost works today as a New York literary agent, primarily for female authors of romances and mysteries, though we have no evidence it's the same Nancy Yost. There are also small dampstains near the spine of the title page and the first page of text. Text comprises a single poem typeset with sometimes as few as two lines per page to accommodate 15 B&W illustrations, most by C.S. Reinhart, A.V.S. Anthony, Mary Hallock Foote, and R. Swain Gifford, all engraved by A.V.S. Anthony. Poem; verse. About 36 pp., but printed to rectos only. Seller Inventory # 008651
