A robot can have capable sensors, correct algorithms, and functioning hardware and still fail because its software components disagree about timing, interfaces, coordinate frames, configuration, or system state. This practical guide addresses the difficult step between running small examples and understanding a complete robot as one integrated system. It begins with modular software architecture, development environments, packages, and node programming in two widely used languages. It then develops streaming communication, request-response operations, long-running goals, runtime configuration, launch behavior, lifecycle management, concurrent execution, distributed middleware, communication policies, and multi-computer networking.
The book then connects software to physical meaning through time, coordinate frames, transforms, robot descriptions, visualization, physics-based simulation, virtual sensors, controllers, and hardware interfaces. Later chapters apply those foundations to localization, sensor fusion, mapping, autonomous movement, path and trajectory planning, recovery behavior, manipulator kinematics, collision checking, testing, debugging, performance observation, security concepts, embedded integration, and deployment.
Inside, you will:- Design clear component responsibilities and interfaces that remain understandable as a robot grows.
- Choose communication patterns according to data flow, timing, feedback, cancellation, and configuration needs.
- Reason about rates, latency, freshness, queues, discovery, and distributed communication instead of treating them as hidden details.
- Keep time, frames, transforms, geometry, sensing, and control consistent from simulation to physical hardware.
- Connect localization, mapping, autonomous movement, and manipulation to the software and hardware interfaces they require.
- Use repeatable testing and debugging methods to find failures across configuration, networking, estimation, planning, control, and deployment.
Worked examples, practice problems, diagrams, engineering checks, and troubleshooting habits turn the material into an active course of study and a later reference. Readers are encouraged to inspect system state, change configuration deliberately, compare expected behavior with measured behavior, and isolate failures by layer instead of guessing from symptoms. The book is suited to undergraduate students, engineers, software developers entering robotics, researchers building a common foundation, makers, and independent developers. Previous experience with the platform named in the title is not assumed, although basic programming familiarity is helpful.
Open the book and begin building the system-level understanding needed to program, simulate, integrate, test, and diagnose modern robots with greater clarity.
