Item description from seller

Modern quarter brown morocco, gilt lettered spine title, marbled paper over boards. Original endpapers retained. Folding chart frontis [short, closed blank margin tear without loss]. 202pp. Volume II begins at page [89]: HARDEE'S TACTICS. VOL. II. SCHOOL OF THE BATTALION. Light to moderate scattered foxing. Text illustrations. Table of Contents begins at page [197]. Two volumes in one, paginated consecutively. Good plus. The book was printed in a number of locations, North and South, in 1861. This is one of the earliest and scarcest. The Publishers' Notice explains, "Supplies of this work from the North having been stopped as contraband of war, this edition is got up for practical purposes and immediate use, in an emergency that admits of no delay; and a considerable portion of remarks and matter, not particularly pertinent, has been omitted. The numbering of sections, however, has been retained, which will explain a hiatus in numbers, wherever it occurs. The edition has been revised in this manner to subserve the pressing demand of a great exigency, and gives all the drill information imperatively necessary for soldier and officer." Parrish & Willingham 4864. Crandall 2433. Confederate Hundred 40 [note]. Not in Allen.…
