You can spend decades building your retirement savings—and then unknowingly give too much of it back through poorly timed withdrawals, unnecessary Roth conversions, higher Medicare premiums, avoidable taxes, or decisions made without considering what happens several years down the road.
The Retirement Tax Playbook takes a different approach.
Instead of giving you a collection of disconnected tax tips, it gives you a practical 5-Season Strategy for understanding how your tax decisions can change throughout the retirement journey.
From the years before retirement to the years when RMDs and Social Security dominate your income—and eventually to survivor and legacy planning—the book helps you identify which decisions matter, when they matter, and how they can affect one another.
The Five Seasons of RetirementAccumulation Season — Position your savings and accounts before retirement.
Transition Season — Prepare for the shift from employment income to portfolio-based income.
Open Season — Recognize the potentially valuable years when you have greater control over taxable income.
Income Season — Coordinate withdrawals, Social Security, RMDs, Medicare premiums, and other sources of retirement income.
Legacy Season — Prepare for survivor taxes, inherited retirement accounts, charitable giving, and the transfer of wealth.
Go beyond "How much tax will I pay this year?"At the heart of the book is the Lifetime Tax Test—a framework for evaluating retirement decisions across multiple years rather than judging them solely by their immediate tax cost.
You'll learn how to think through:
- Tax planning in retirement and how to manage taxable income over time
- Roth conversions—when they may help, when they may not, and how to evaluate the trade-offs
- Withdrawal sequencing across taxable, tax-deferred, and Roth accounts
- Social Security taxation and how other income can affect the taxable portion of your benefits
- RMDs and the tax consequences they can create later in retirement
- IRMAA and how today's income can affect future Medicare premiums
- Capital gains and the importance of managing your overall taxable-income picture
- HSAs and their potential role in retirement tax planning
- Qualified charitable distributions and tax-efficient charitable giving
- Survivor tax planning and the potential impact of moving from married filing jointly to single
- Inherited retirement accounts and the tax considerations that can affect beneficiaries
- Annual tax reviews that help you adapt your strategy as your circumstances change
This is where The Retirement Tax Playbook goes beyond simply explaining tax rules.
You'll get practical tools and frameworks you can return to throughout retirement, including:
- The Lifetime Tax Test
- The Annual Retirement Tax Review
- The Retirement Tax Scorecard
- Annual Tax Calendar
- Decision frameworks and checklists
- Practical worksheets
- Worked examples and retirement scenarios
The goal isn't to predict every future tax rule or find a magical strategy that eliminates taxes.
It's to help you make better decisions with the information you have today—while keeping tomorrow's tax consequences in view.
Whether you're approaching retirement, planning an early retirement, recently retired, or already drawing retirement income, this book can help you build a more deliberate, flexible, and tax-aware retirement strategy.
This gives you the framework to use your retirement savings wisely.
